I’m Al. I started The Nunhead Framer in 2018, a few months after our daughter was born. Working from a studio at home in Nunhead gave me the freedom to build the business around family life, and I’m still working from that same studio today.
I design and make every frame myself. Some pieces need a straightforward, well-made frame; others call for more choice in the materials, mounting and finish. That’s why I offer both Essential and Bespoke framing.
I keep the business small and take on a limited number of projects at a time. When you get in touch, you’re speaking to the person who will assess your artwork and make the frame. Studio visits are by appointment, and you’ll find the practical details below.
-
II frame prints, works on paper, photographs, canvases and selected objects. Straightforward pieces may suit Essential framing; artwork that needs more choice or a particular mounting approach is better suited to Bespoke.
There are some projects I can’t take on in my studio:
Broken-glass replacement or frame repairs
Mounts, empty frames or cut glass on their own
Textiles, including samplers, and sports shirts
Particularly large work, generally over one metre
If you’re unsure whether I can frame your piece, send me a Bespoke enquiry with a photograph and its dimensions. I’ll let you know what’s possible.
-
Essential framing uses a set range of sizes, frames, mounting and glazing. You can choose your options online and see the price as you go. I’ll check your choices and artwork details before confirming the job. If anything needs to change, I’ll explain the revised price before you decide whether to proceed.
Bespoke framing is priced individually according to the artwork, size, materials and work involved. I’ll provide an initial estimate from the information you send, then confirm the final price once I’ve seen the artwork and we’ve agreed the design.
Bespoke estimates are valid for 14 days from the date I send them. After that, I may need to prepare a new estimate if costs have changed. Essential prices on the website may also be updated as material and labour costs change. Any updated price applies to future requests, not to a job already agreed and booked in.

Essential framing
Choose your size, frame, mounting and glazing online. You’ll see the price as you go. Send me your choices and I’ll check the details before confirming the job.
Bespoke framing
Tell me about your artwork, include its dimensions and upload a few photographs. I’ll reply within three working days with an initial estimate, some thoughts or any questions. If you’d like to proceed, we’ll arrange a studio consultation to see the work and agree the final design and price.

Essential framing
I’ll check the choices and artwork details you’ve sent and reply within three working days. I’ll confirm whether the frame is suitable, answer any questions and arrange a time for you to bring in the artwork. Essential framing doesn’t include a design consultation: you choose the frame, mounting and glazing online. If anything needs to change after I’ve seen the artwork, I’ll discuss the options and price with you before booking in the job.
Bespoke framing
I’ll reply within three working days with an initial estimate, some thoughts or any questions. If you’d like to proceed, we’ll arrange a studio consultation to see the artwork, assess its condition, look at framing options and agree the final design and price. Consultations usually take around 20 minutes per item. Please let me know when booking if you think you’ll need longer.
Visiting the studio
Consultations, artwork drop-offs and collections are all by appointment. Please don’t visit the studio or arrange for artwork to be delivered before we’ve agreed the details and confirmed a time.
I can often arrange drop-offs and collections in the evening, usually between 18:00 and 19:00, subject to availability. The studio is small and contains machinery, so I can accommodate one customer at a time. Children and dogs cannot come into the workshop.
A 40% deposit is paid when you bring in your artwork and the job is booked in. The remaining balance is paid at collection. I’ll confirm the expected completion time after drop-off and, for Bespoke work, once we’ve agreed the final design.
If you have a Gift Certificate, please mention it when you enquire or reply to my first email. Include its code and the recipient’s name, and bring the certificate when you drop off your artwork. I’ll apply it to the final balance when you collect.
-
Most framing projects currently take around two to three weeks from the time the artwork is dropped off and the job is booked in. This can vary with my workload, the materials needed and the complexity of the work. I’ll confirm an expected completion date when we book your project.
If you need your frame for a particular date, please tell me when you enquire. Priority framing may be available for an additional 25%, depending on my schedule and whether the required materials can be obtained in time. I’ll confirm the date and any priority charge with you before the job is booked in.
-
I accept credit and debit cards, including Apple Pay and Google Pay. The studio is cashless.
A 40% deposit is paid when you bring in your artwork and the job is booked in. The remaining balance is paid when you collect the finished frame.
If you need to cancel, please email me as soon as possible. I’ll refund your deposit less any reasonable costs already incurred for your project, such as materials ordered specifically for it or work already carried out. I’ll explain any deduction and refund the remaining amount. This does not affect your rights if the finished work is faulty or not as agreed.
Gift Certificates
Please mention your Gift Certificate in your enquiry or when you reply to my first email. Include its code and the recipient’s name, and bring the certificate when you drop off your artwork.
A Gift Certificate can be used towards the final balance, but not the 40% deposit. It cannot be exchanged for cash or used after its expiry date. No change is given if the final balance is less than the certificate’s value.
-
When your frame is ready, I’ll email you to arrange a collection appointment. Your work will be wrapped and ready to take home. Collections are by appointment, and the remaining balance is paid when you collect.
Please plan how you’ll get larger pieces home. Framed work can be heavy and may need a suitable vehicle or someone to help you carry it. If you’re travelling by taxi, please arrange your return journey before arriving. As the studio is part of my home, I don’t have a waiting area. The Waverley Arms is opposite if you need somewhere to wait.
I don’t currently offer delivery. Studio storage space is limited, so please collect your work within seven days of my email unless we agree another date. Work left beyond the agreed collection period may incur a storage and handling charge of £5 per day. I’ll contact you before applying a charge.
-
When carrying your frame, keep it upright and support it with a hand on each side. Avoid lifting it by the top edge, which can put strain on the corner joints. Don’t twist or flex the frame, as this can damage the frame or glazing.
If you need to store it before hanging, keep it wrapped and place it upright against a wall on a stable surface, or lay it flat on its back. Don’t stack other items on top of it.
Use fixings suitable for the weight of the frame and the type of wall. Two fixing points usually help keep a picture level and supported. If you’re unsure about hanging a large or heavy frame, ask a professional installer.
Avoid hanging artwork in direct sunlight, above a radiator or in places with large changes in humidity, such as a bathroom. These conditions can damage the artwork over time, even when it has been framed with protective materials.

My usual opening hours are listed on the Contact page. Studio visits are by appointment, including artwork drop-offs and collections, so please wait for me to confirm a day and time before coming over.
At busy times I may pause new commissions. If that happens, I’ll update the website so you know before sending an enquiry.
